Day Five

Today was a day for celebration – Fiji style! A formal church service was scheduled for 9am to kick off proceedings, but the school operates in “Fiji time” and so the service was delayed until 10am! The school and village were celebrating the retirement of one teacher, and the opening of the playground. The team did some last minute shopping the evening before so we were all frocked up in bula shirts, sulus and bare feet. John, Jacqui and Kylee took an early morning trip to the market to purchase some savusavu (kava) for presentation to the village elders. There was heavy rain overnight so the sign writing didn't happen. The villagers improvised with a temporary sign on butcher’s paper. We sent team delegates to sit up the front as VIPS whilst Kylee and Emma did their best to keep the kids quiet down the back during the church ceremony. Sarah's balloon popped in middle of prayer causing lots of giggling by students in the back rows. Next on the agenda was a kava ceremony followed by traditional dances (meke) by the students. A lovo lunch followed – chicken, dalo, cassava cooked in a pit underground, accompanied by numerous traditional dishes including a seaweed coconut dish and our favourite – pineapple pie. Little Sarah enjoyed her meal so much that she vomited all over her new bula dress!

Afterwards we were ready to hit the road but we couldn’t go anywhere until the car keys and Riley were located. Riley was way out the back joining in a whole school game of rugby. The keys eventually re-appeared.

A big afternoon in the pool followed by a full team dinner at Raffles next door…..Tane didn’t think much of the meal and fell asleep!

A few post-project tasks to complete including sorting through hours of video footage and photos, some participant questionnaires and most importantly some R&R on a beach in the Yasawas.

Almost the whole team!

Day Four

All the pieces of the puzzle came together today – luckily as the deadline is this afternoon! We have managed to achieve our goals originally planned to do over 5 days in 4 in order to have the playground ready for the celebrations tomorrow. The sand arrived for the sandpit – and the truck came within mm of crashing into the timber and destroying the entire sandpit! We are grateful for the assistance of NZ expat Annie-Lou who joined us for the day. Emma and Jacqui worked with the Class 8 students to develop a set of playground rules – the challenge being to guide students away from “do not” and “no” rules to more positive phrases but we got there in the end and they enjoyed a different approach to teaching. Amir and Mima attended Class 1 lessons in the morning to gain a different perspective. Riley enjoyed a game of rugby with the boys in the afternoon and certainly worked up a sweat. The moment we had all been waiting for came this afternoon – we finally allowed a large group of students on the equipment!

After an exciting day and a great feeling of achievement, we bundled into the van and took a road trip to the beach (an hour’s drive) to Natadola. Tane – our team clown – chose to dump a pooh in the middle of the chapel lawn at the 5 star Intercontinental Resort!

Day Three

Not a great start to the day today. We decided to take the whole team into town to collect some extra bolts and things – bad decision. Nothing happens in a hurry here and so a vanload of hot cranky kids. The morning didn’t get much better – nits were discovered, drill bits were broken, the camcorder stopped working, our first (and only) minor injury occurred (a bruised hand). One of the local blokes started up the angle grinder with no warning – causing a fast getaway for Sarah and Kylee!

The day improved after lunch, with two pieces of play equipment completed. The kids went for a nice long walk collecting flowers along the way, which kept them busy and allowed the adults to get stuck into the job at hand. In true community spirit, all hands on deck today. Students, mothers, teachers, and unemployed youth joined in. We are also grateful for the assistance of QLD expat Suzanne who joined us for the day.

Jacqui almost had to relocate rooms upon arrival home due to an incredible stench…..which turned out to be the neighbours dying their hair with homemade hair dye, allegedly made from chicken pooh extract.

Day Two

Today is Kylee’s birthday and the kindy kids brought tears to her eyes singing Happy Birthday with great enthusiasm. The morning work was focussed on ensuring the poles were level and straight ready for the concrete. The kindy students joined our kids in cleaning tyres and then Makelesi and Vika took the kids and Kylee on a wander through the village. A fantastic traditional lunch of roti and curry was enjoyed by all. We commenced painting – with lots of helpers. Finally the concrete truck arrived – a far better option than mixing it ourselves in the heat. The local boys were on hand to assist with the heavy work. Geoff was amazed at the way barrow loads of concrete were moved like they were loaves of bread! Our reward at the end of the day – icy-poles and a swim and a cold drink.
